Invariably, it was the little yappy ones that would respond, but I guess that’s OK, because they’re the kind of dogs that hotels want. This particular place didn’t have a weight restriction, but knowing so many do, I had to chuckle whenever we’d walk down the hall and the tinkling of our dog’s collar would catch the attention of four-legged guests in other rooms. Granted, our girl would have a hard time passing for 70 pounds, but at the right angle, and in just the right light, who’s to say she’s not? And if they were to press the situation, couldn’t we fall back on the notion that it’s not polite to ask a girl her weight? In the end, we didn’t chance it.Īfter our son moved to the Edmonton area in 2019, we became frequent guests at an airport hotel whose dog rooms were all on the first floor across from the pool. It seemed odd they were OK with 70 pounds of canine in a room, just not all in one package. When we were recently booking a hotel in Coeur D’Alene, one place we liked was not only pet-friendly, but allowed two dogs per room, however the kicker was that neither could exceed 35 pounds. There’s no denying that some dogs are better behaved than others, but as far as I can tell, that has nothing to do with how much they weigh, so why make that the determining factor? I can only assume that a bad big dog can cause more problems than an equally bad small one. Are all small dogs quiet and well behaved? Are all big dogs noisy and destructive? However, I’m at a loss to explain the weight limit. I fully recognize that dogs can pose challenges for a hotel, from unwanted barking (like there’s a wanted kind) to the damage they could possibly inflict on a room, so I’m grateful that certain ones do make accommodation. The allowable limit can vary from place to place, but I can assure you that if a hotel has a restriction, it rarely ever gets anywhere close to the almost 100 pounds we’d need it to be in order to accommodate our big girl. Many hotels take a hard pass on dogs, but among those that are pet-friendly, there are quite a few that impose a weight restriction. No, I’m talking about the special kind of stupidity that brings their dog to a hotel in suburbia, one smack dab in the middle of a concrete jungle complete with strip malls and fast-food joints.įor the purposes of this column, let’s get past the idiocy of travelling with your dog to such places and focus on a common hotel policy that just doesn’t seem fair, at least not to someone who’s the owner of a rather large dog. And by holiday, I don’t mean a week at the campground or the lakefront cabin, places where Rover would be a logical part of the travelling party. I’m among the contingent of idiots who think that taking your dog on holiday is a good idea. Big doesn’t necessarily mean bad, but just try convincing certain hotels of that logic.
